Restore Your SmileThe Importance of Root Canal Therapy
When the pulp and nerves inside of a tooth are diseased, it can cause the tooth to die over time. To prevent this from happening, we perform root canal therapy. For root canals, we make a small entry point on the top crown of the tooth. Then, we remove the damaged pulp and clean out the tooth’s canals to keep future infections at bay. After cleaning the tooth, we fill in the empty space and close off the entry point. This simple, common procedure can preserve your natural tooth and restore your oral health!
Root Canal Therapy FAQs
Is a root canal considered surgery?
Not usually. When it comes to non-surgical root canal therapy (the most common type), it’s basically a deep filling. For this procedure, we access the root canals of the tooth and thoroughly clean them out and fill them. Surgical root canal therapy is used when a tooth is severely fractured, the infection is too significant, or we can’t see the area that is fractured or find the source of the pain through an X-ray. Because of this, we make an incision in the gums to see the tooth from the side to get a better view for more precise treatment.
What do I need to do after a root canal?
You may experience some temporary discomfort following your procedure. Feel free to place ice on your cheek closest to the area of the tooth and use over-the-counter pain medication as recommended. For most, you can plan to come in for a follow-up appointment where we’ll place a dental crown over the tooth for additional strength and protection.
Can you be sedated during a root canal?
Yes! We always thoroughly numb the area around the tooth and we also offer additional sedation options for patients in need. We want you to feel as comfortable as possible throughout the process, so please let us know if you need any sedation accommodations!
